Julius Bobke examines the canvas as a carrier of meaning. His approach attempts to understand painting not as a mere surface treatment, but aims to think through the objecthood of material and symbol. He uses hand-woven, antique canvases and prints on them in a digital process that is again subjected to manual processing. In this way, the tension between material and intangible symbolism is played out, while the ornamental print patterns, borrowed from antique carpets, refer to the canvas as a hand-finished object.
